"Music allows us to strip away all that separates us and urges us to see and feel what unites us. Ultimately our biggest challenge on this planet is to understand, empathise and elevate one another in pursuit of our common humanity. There is no greater challenge or reward." ~ Nicola Benedetti
This website has been a work in progress. This well-being page was completed during COVID-19 when videos of quarantined neighbors singing together on their balconies, virtual choirs shared on Youtube to help people cope and heal, and performances in honor of our essential workers were performed in the streets, inside homes and on stage. Scottish classical violinist, Nicola Benedetti, is one of those performers who was inspired to create and contribute something virtually to support music education and the well-being of children and communities worldwide: Virtual Benedetti Sessions.
Nicola has been an advocate and supporter of music education for years through her Benedetti Foundation. Here is her introductory video of the launching of her Virtual Benedetti Sessions and her Well-Being sessions.

As I shared on the Well-Being home page, it will take all of us working together to make the concept of Music Education for Life accessible to all. The Virtual Benedetti Sessions are an example of what can happen when people come together from different organizations to share their love of music in hopes to unite, inspire, educate, and heal. I saw teachers from Big Noise Sistema Scotland contributing videos as part in the Benedetti sessions, all of which can be accessed on Nicola Benedetti Youtube Channel. There are videos for everyone: beginners, intermediate and advanced players, as well as adult learners, covering topics such as technique, repertoire, tips and the basics, creative responses, improvisation, and well-being. I believe and hope that these videos will remain on the youtube channel, so please check them out!
As examples, here are videos from members of the brilliant Big Noise Sistema Scotland staff who took me under their wing while I visited their inspiring Big Noise program in Raploch, Scotland. Joelle Broad shares a wonderful way to warm-up and relax the body before playing; David Munn, intermediate cello tutorials; and Steward Wilson, double-bass tutorials.
These musicians generously shared with me their classrooms, lessons and time to ask lots of questions. Thank you, Big Noise, for continuing to share your work with others in our efforts to use music for social change. |
