The first page of the Musical Futuresʼ Songwriting Guide states, "This guide should be treated as a framework – student voice and creativity should form the content and determine the direction of all songwriting work" (p. 101). This is a founding principle of the Musical Futures approach to music-making in the classroom, which is informal in nature: social, experiential, student-centered and non-linear.
Musical Futures offers trainings, resources and free guides and videos to help teachers motivate and engage students in the music classroom. The Guide to Songwriting and the Writers Unblocked project are both available for free download and provide tips to approaching the songwriting process from different entry points: lyrics, chord structure, melody line, or digital riff created on Garageband.

Musical Futures houses a 4-chord song bank that lists songs using the common I,V, vi, IV chord progression. Students play with this chord progression - moving and mixing them to create their own chord sequence and songs. These elementary students from Norbridge Academy wrote their own lyrics and music after completing the Musical Futuresʼ Just Play curriculum.
